Crash Course: The Body Rocket with CMT™ class at Crunch Gym is a core-focused workout using a device that – for lack of a more technical term – is sort of like a giant two-handled maraca that you shake, shake, shake to activate your abs. Prepare to get creative with the thing as you shake it to the beat of a bumping playlist. This class is high energy, low impact, and really fun. Find it now at Crunch Gyms in New York and Miami, and at locations in LA and San Francisco this July.

One of my favorite things about fit crashing is the opportunity to test out the latest workout trends. I’ve been blogging for almost three years now – plenty of time to rack up some zany fitness experiences.

I mean, do you remember the time I had to borrow a dog to get into this bootcamp?

Or that time I strapped into a moving elliptical machine and whirled around town?

And lets not forget the time I shook my groove thing next to 90’s sensation Mya as we took our dance cues from a guy in a star spangled Uncle Sam suitAhem.

IMG_1055.JPGThe latest workout innovation to spark my curiosity came courtesy of Crunch gym. They invited me to their 54th Street location in NYC to test out one of the latest crazes to hit their group fitness schedule.

The Crunch website describes the Body Rocket with CMT™ class like this:

Sound off in this intense momentum building, cardio and core focused class. Using the weighted Core Momentum Trainer (CMT™), the movement and sound combine for instant feedback, helping to propel you to your optimum athletic potential. You will catch, launch, throw and punch to the weighted sound. The slammin’ playlist will enhance the power you harness from your core and will rocket your entire body into a long, lean powerhouse.

Intrigued? I was.

So I went. And I shook that CMT™ like nobody’s business. And let me tell you…it was tough.

IMG_1054.JPGI describe the device as a giant two-handled maraca because that’s really the best way I can put it into words. It’s a contraption filled with weighted pellets that shift back and forth as you move the CMT™ from side to side. Kind of like a rain stick. A big, brightly-colored, soreness-inducing rain stick.

The whole purpose of the CMT™ is to make you engage your core as you work through various swinging, chopping, and throwing movements. As the weight shifts, your muscles fire in all the right places. It’s such a beautifully simple + sinister idea.

59th_groupfitnessThe class itself flows through various different combos, pairing the CMT™ movements with lunges, squats, and other foundational elements.

But let me tell it to you straight. While I love a good core-crushing workout as much as the next crasher, I have to say the best part of the class is the sound the CMT™ makes as it shifts from side to side. It’s essentially a giant maraca. It whooshes and clacks like one.

And when you get that thing shaking in time to just the right song…it is SO. MUCH. FUN. Never mind that your arms, abs, and legs are on fire. You’re bringing the beat. And at 8 a.m. on a Tuesday – that’s almost as magnificent as a large iced latte and lemon poppyseed muffin. Almost.

IMG_0940.JPGThank you, thank you Crunch for inviting me to try this enormously fun new workout.

For those of you who haven’t been to a Crunch and are interested in checking out Body Rocket with CMT™ or other classes, you can sign up for a free guest pass. If you’re already a member, check out the group fitness schedule to find the next class. Happy shaking!

As interesting as this class sounds, the real exciting thing I learned from this post is that a doggie bootcamp exists!! Can we bring that to NYC??
