First look: the DISQ resistance device at Crunch

disq class crunchThe fitness industry never ceases to amaze me with its innovations. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, someone releases a new product that blows your mind one more time. It’s one of the most wonderful and wild things about this crazy workout world. No matter what’s been done before, there’s always room for more.

For example, I had the fun opportunity to test out the new DISQ training device at Crunch last week. You can see me goofing around with it in the photo above. Have you ever seen anything like this? It looks like a bonafide super hero belt. Just call me Captain Resisto.

disq class crunch 1So what exactly is the DISQ? It’s a wearable resistance training system that uses a system of pulleys to amp up whatever workout you may be doing. It feels like walking around with resistance bands tied to your legs. It’s not debilitating, but the added pressure definitely kicks things up a notch. The extra resistance on your legs and arms also forces you to constantly stabilize your core – bonus!

If you want to check it out, Crunch is offering a new program of classes that use the DISQ, including a yoga, dance, and a pilates “reformer” inspired workout. I got a preview of all three and can honestly say they are a blast. Sure dance is fun on its own. But when you incorporate a superhero belt that makes you feel strong and kind of invincible…your moves automatically get upgraded to backup dancer status. Or how about yoga? Power yoga is amazing, but can you imagine all of those chaturangas and arm balances with a kick of resistance added to them?

disq class crunch 2My favorite of all the classes was called the “DISQ Reformer” – a workout inspired by the moves you would do on a pilates reformer machine, but using the DISQ instead. While nothing will replace the muscle quivering madness of the reformer, the DISQ does a fantastic job super-sizing those small pilates movements. After about 15 minutes I was starting to get those too-familiar muscle shakes and quakes. I can only imagine the tremors after a full class. I would love to sign myself up for one and see what other pilates moves the DISQ can remix…just as soon as my muscles recover.

So there you have it! The DISQ. Looks crazy. Hurts so good. If you have access to a Crunch gym through Classpass or a monthly membership, try it for yourself and report back. I want to hear what you think!
