It has been nearly a month since I put out a call for contributors to help continue DC fit crashing while I settle into my new life here in New York City. In all honesty, I was wholly unprepared for the sheer avalanche of smart, witty, and fun individuals who would light up my inbox with their sweaty credentials. You all blew me away with your enthusiasm and support. More than 30 fitness enthusiasts offered to help keep DC fit crashing alive, and to each and every single one of you, thank you from the bottom of my spandex-clad heart.
After much deliberation, I narrowed the applicants down to four ladies who I know will do a bang up job as DC fitness ambassadors and tour guides. I’ve had so much fun getting to know them and their fitness personalities and hope you will too!
So what will you find on The Fit Crasher from now on?
Fresh reviews each week from both DC and New York City bringing the latest and greatest from local fitness scene. There might even be a few fun surprises mixed in – you’ll have to stick around to find out!
And now, without further ado, meet your new DC fit crashers:
Years in DC: Technically three, but I’ve lived in the DC/MD/VA area my whole life!
Top reason why DC is your fit crash city of choice: The views! There’s nothing better than getting sweaty outside with a view of the Nation’s capital.
Fitness Personality: I think running races will always take the top spot on my fitness hierarchy, but now that I have a few half marathons under my belt I know how important it is to switch things up. From barre to yoga to pilates to boot camp, I get so much joy out of trying new things and keeping my routine fresh!
Favorite post fit-crash activity: Going to work! Starting my day with fitness sets me off on the right track for the rest of the day.
Years in DC: 2 summers, just moved here full-time.
Top reason why DC is your fit crash city of choice: The fact that the city is very walkable and has a great metro system keeps me connected to the whole rather than just the neighborhood where I live. This opens so many fitness opportunities that don’t exist if you have to worry about traffic and parking!
Fitness personality: My favorite classes are the ones where someone is telling me what to do, when to do it, and to do it harder. In other words, I’m not great at pushing myself (“Eh, I don’t want to run. Maybe I should stop at this store to look at these gold bangles. I only have 7,800, so I should get more. Besides, 0.25 miles is enough for anyone.”) Thus, I seek out the sweatiest cycle houses, most brutal bootcamps, and core-crushingest barre or Pilates classes. When given the opportunity, though, I love trying new things outside. Like wake boarding…poorly.
Favorite post fit-crash activity: Cooking. In an ideal world, I’d pick up a bunch of fresh ingredients at the farmer’s market, bring them home, and whip up a gorgeous plate of eggs and veggies for my husband and I. But he would help.
Greatest sweaty accomplishment: Doing 7 straight minutes of burpees. I was challenged by my husband and recommend it to no one.
Years in DC: 5
Top reason why DC is your fit crash city of choice: The people! There’s so many fitness fanatics in DC, it’s easy to get motivated to get moving.
Fitness personality: I like to mix it up as much as possible, though once I find something I really like, I am easily hooked. These days I’m addicted to barre and spinning, but I’m trying to get back into running after a stress fracture sidelined me for a bit. I also love doing non-traditional workouts on the weekends, like hiking and kayaking, which allow me to be active but also spend some quality time outside with my husband and pup.
Favorite post fit-crash activity: A well-earned froyo stop.
Greatest sweaty accomplishment: I ran (& most importantly, finished) the Richmond Marathon.
Years in DC: 2+
Top reason why DC is your fit crash city of choice: I love that DC offers so many community-oriented fitness opportunities. Whether you’re into spin, yoga, or running the Lincoln Memorial stairs, there’s a group of equally motivated individuals out there just waiting to welcome you.
Fitness personality: I love workouts that push me into the “mind over matter” zone and challenge me to leave it all on the table. Sometimes that means giving it one more turn on the resistance knob, sinking one inch lower on the barre, or sprinting up that final hill. It amazes me how encouragement – from either your instructor or your peer – can propel you forward when you thought you had nothing left.
Favorite post fit-crash activity: After a tough morning workout, you can find me hitting up the DC coffeehouse scene.
Greatest sweaty accomplishment: Training for my first half marathon. Finishing the race ahead of my goal time was extremely rewarding, but crossing off the mileage each and every week was incredibly gratifying.
